Restoring Vision? Thriving with Deafness? What’s happening with TheBlindGuide? Has he lost his focus? The answer is a definitive No but I do want to recognize the diversity of my audience and their potential interests.
Restoring vision was inspired by a reach out from Megan Hartsell. As a bit of background, the eye care community is frequently criticized for “abandoning” patients when their vision can no longer be corrected. The criticism is probably a bit unfair but there is also an element of truth. The best answer I’ve heard is they feel as though they cannot help further. While they cannot correct the vision, they could be more proactive to turning over their patient to associations for the blind.
When Megan reached out, my first reaction was restoring vision is not my focus. It’s thriving with vision loss. There are several reasons that perspective is wrong. As a caregiver to someone who lost their vision, I am keenly aware of the need to protect my own vision. An article on restoring vision may be intriguing to other caregivers who still have their vision. Perhaps a bigger reason is that 80% of blindness is avoidable. Don’t believe me? Much of the avoidable blindness is in third world settings but the point remains that restoring vision is a relevant topic even for someone who has lost their vision. Even in first world settings, the progress medically and technologically suggests that more and more vision loss can be corrected. That’s exciting news but early solutions will be quite expensive. Which brings me back to Megan and the article she sent to me. An excerpt follows and I encourage you to read the full article.
Better vision doesn’t have to break the bank.
Thinking of ditching your glasses and contacts in favor of laser eye surgery? As technology advances, it’s becoming safer, more effective and more available than ever. Nevertheless, in many cases, the procedure still entails a significant cost, which may discourage people who would benefit from seeking treatment.
Better eyesight is a worthwhile investment. It’s a life-changing procedure for the cost of an old used car. However, not everyone’s bank account is prepared for purchasing either one. But don’t dismiss the possibility yet: there are savings options available to help lower procedure costs and lessen their impact on your day-to-day budget. Stay with us to learn more about laser eye surgery costs, coverage, and payment options that can make the care you need more affordable.
